Area Activities: Take a breather

tab2Everyone knows that Breckenridge is a mecca of outdoor activity, but for those who would like a breather from fishing, hiking, rafting and snow fun, here's a look "inside" the less strenuous list. Take look at museums with loads of rich Colorado history, revel in a balloon ride over the Rockies of just slip into a cushy robe and enjoy a spa pampering. Ahhh.

Edwin Carter Museum

  • The Edwin Carter Museum is in a historic 1875 building that honors a Gold Rush prospector who recognized the harm caused to the environment and wildlife from mining. A taxidermist, Carter collected thousands of Rocky Mountain animals in his home, which is now a museum. It has interactive displays and exhibits. Admission is free.

Mountain Top Children's Museum

  • Here, children can slip on scrubs and examine X-rays and bones, make and identify animal tracks, enter a "bear cave," play around in the Wonder Lab mixing colors in a test tube or just get creative with construction and artwork. There's also a summer day camp for those who want to stay longer.

Red, White and Blue Fire Museum

  • Although the name is patriotic, Red, White and Blue originates from three different fire companies that were organized in 1882 to protect the mining district of Breckenridge after three large fires almost destroyed the town.  The Fire House Museum is housed in an historical two-story residence with its original stainglass windows featuring authentic fire-fighting equipment. Free admission, $5 suggested donation.
